Jamboree Question of the Day - Day 87, Feb 7th 2011

Never before had taxpayers confronted so many changes at once as they had in the Tax Reform Act of 1986.

(A) so many changes at once as they had in
(B) at once as many changes as
(C) at once as many changes that there were with
(D) as many changes at once as they confronted in
(E) so many changes at once that confronted them in

Solution (Posted on Feb 8th):

Idiomatically (as.......as) only D is sound. In B, the meaning is incorrect. Here, the fact that taxpayers at once confronted as many changes... is the meaning required. Moreover, changes as the Tax act.. is wrong. This, D is correct.
